XMDesigner and Visio (2013 or 2016) for Office 365

How Can We Help?

XMDesigner and Visio (2013 or 2016) for Office 365

< Back

After installing Microsoft Visio 2013 or 2016 for Office 365 you receive the below error on launch of the XMDesigner (v6.1 and v6.5).

XMDesigner_Error

The reason for the problem: Microsoft has moved where the Visio reference files are stored with their Office365 installations.

To Resolve for Visio 2013:

The DLL in question is C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15\RICHED20.DLL which the XMDesigner could not find.

Perform a search in Windows Explorer for the RICHED20.DLL file to locate it. On Windows 10 installation with Office 365 the file was found at the following location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\vfs\ProgramFilesCommonX86\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15

Copying the DLL in question to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15\” where the XMDesigner is expecting it will resolve the error and allow the Visio modeler to be used.

To Resolve for Visio 2016:

The DLL in question is C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\RICHED20.DLL which the XMDesigner could not find.

Perform a search in Windows Explorer for the RICHED20.DLL file to locate it. On a Windows 10 installation with Office 365 the file was found at the following location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\VFS\ProgramFilesCommonX86\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16

Copying the DLL in question to “C\Program Files (x86)\Common Files \Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\” where the XMDesigner is expecting it will resolve the error and allow the Visio modeler to be used.
